PDF/X

PDF/X is the version of PDF made for professional printing and graphic arts, defined under ISO 15930. When a file goes to a commercial press, small surprises like a missing font or the wrong color space turn into expensive reprints. PDF/X exists to remove those surprises before the job runs.

It enforces print-ready rules: fonts must be embedded, colors are specified in CMYK or spot colors rather than screen RGB, and the file declares trim, bleed, and output intent so the printer knows exactly how the page should be cut and how ink should behave. Variants like PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-3, and PDF/X-4 differ mainly in how they handle color and transparency.

If you are sending artwork to a print shop, supplying a PDF/X file is the safest way to make sure what you designed is what comes off the press.
